Join Us

Join the Movement

You do not need an invitation to defend the land, the water and the ecosystems that hold our lives, all you need is a movement that shares your lived reality, experience and lets organise for climate action together.  We are girls, young women and allies who organise where we live  on riverbanks, in schools, in markets, in indigenous communities, in council meetings. We share what we know, we hold power to account collectively.

Who can join?

Girls and young women in all our diversity; community and women’s groups and allies who are willing to follow young women’s leadership rather than replace it.

Our Story

Rooted in Community, Driven by Change

Girls for Climate Action (G4CA) is a young women and girl- led eco-feminist movement in Uganda founded in 2016 in the riparian communities of the River Nile in Jinja, in Uganda’s Busoga sub-region by a group of 9 young women in the Jinja, Uganda – one of the riparian zones of the River Nile. Our activism was born from our lived experiences of floods, droughts and environmental injustice, and has grown into organized advocacy for climate and environmental justice at local, national level and in global spaces.

Our work centers the realities of women and girls at the frontlines of climate and environmental harm. We advocate for inclusive policy formulation and implementation, support women-led climate solutions into green jobs and build the collective power of women and girls to defend their rights to land, water, livelihoods and a clean and healthy environment.

Our Focus Area

Learn. Lead. Organise. Transform.

Through grassroots action, we drive sustainable solutions, amplify marginalized voices, and cultivate lasting eco-justice, ensuring a healthier planet where both people and ecosystems thrive together.

1

Climate Leadership, and Evidence-based Advocacy.

Through the Climate Corps Fellowship; we equip young women and girls with the climate knowledge, advocacy skills and policy engagement that enables them to take leadership at the local, national and international global spaces. We build the confidence, analysis and networks that turn girls and young women into active community organisers for climate justice.Join the next Cohort of the Climate Corps Fellowship here (insert link)

Shifting power to young women and girls through the environmental committees: We further engage Local environment sub-committees to understand their roles and responsibilities, make the committees inclusive of young women and girls and push for gender transformative local policies and laws. We translate policy into the languages our communities actually speak, and we take our communities into the rooms where decisions are made. We hold polluters accountable and we demand that environmental law works for the people living closest to the damage.

2

Climate Resilience and Livelihoods.

The climate resilience programs equips women and girls with green skills, understanding that across communities women have local and indigenous knowledge that they are already using to adapt but lack technical skills, access and control to productive natural resources, and financial resources to scale/replicate their adaptation solutions. Women are already adapting. We back women-led green enterprise and climate-resilient agriculture so that adaptation also puts food on the table and money in women's own hands.

Land, water and natural resource governance: Our rights to land, water and a clean and healthy environment are not separate from our rights over our own bodies and futures. We organise so that women can own, access and govern the resources they work. Through community barazas.

3

Climate Education and HerClimate Innovation Challenge.

We take climate learning into primary and secondary schools through a creative curriculum built for young people, because mindsets formed early are the ones that hold. The Climate education programs are implemented through our practical curriculum and a club model for sustainability. Do you want us to be at your school,Invite us!

Intergenerational and feminist knowledge: Our grandmothers have been adapting to a changing climate for decades with knowledge no report has ever credited. We document it, honour it and put it to work alongside young women's energy. Eco-innovations challenge. The culmination of the climate education series in schools is the Eco-innovations challenge that enables students to share their climate innovation and girls through the HerClimate Innovation challenge.
